Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction - State Report Cards
Today, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction (DPI) released “report cards” for schools across the state using data from the 2022–2023 school year. Overall, the Madison Metropolitan School District (MMSD) earned a rating of “Meets Expectations” (three stars), with a score of 68.3. Compared to the 2021–2022 school year, the district saw an increase of 0.8 percentage points, from 67.5. Across the district, 30 schools remained at stable ratings, and seven realized score improvements over the prior year.
“MMSD continues to see gains in the academic outcomes of our students,” said Lisa Kvistad, interim superintendent. “Our district’s dedicated Central Office and school-based staff are fully engaged in identifying opportunities for improvement in every building, as well as implementing strategies to support all learners.”
Across the district, the majority of schools were determined to meet, exceed, or significantly exceed expectations. In total, six MMSD schools achieved ratings of “Significantly Exceeds Expectations”; 10 “Exceeds Expectations”; 22 “Meets Expectations”; seven “Meets Few Expectations”; and two “Fails to Meet Expectations.” Five schools participated in the Alternate Rating process, four of which scored “Satisfactory” progress, with one rating “Needs Improvement.”
Across Dane County, nine school districts earned four stars (“Exceeds Expectations”), and seven districts (including MMSD) received three stars (“Meets Expectations”). Numerical scores ranged from 63.2 to 79.4, with MMSD rating higher than four other Dane County school districts.
Notably, MMSD realized year-over-year increases in its percentages of students who scored either Proficient or Advanced in the English language arts and mathematics sections of the state’s Forward Exam. MMSD students also outperformed the state in terms of participation in art and design, dance, and theater courses.
"We are encouraged by the demonstrated growth that this report shows, particularly as we move further past the pandemic and our scholars progress in fully readjusting to in-classroom learning," said TJ McCray, MMSD deputy superintendent. "We expect that, with support and guidance from our world-class educators, Madison students will continue to advance in their abilities, and that future data will bear that out."
Report cards are released each fall per state statute, as part of the state’s accountability system.
